Isola del Garda
For a really different day.
Isola del Garda is the largest island of Lake Garda. Over the centuries the island has had various names, linked to the owner. The history of the island is very old, dating back to Roman times.
This was proven by the discovery of some Roman gravestones, which were later donated to the Roman museum in Brescia. With the decline of the Roman Empire the island was used as a hunting reserve.
Later the island is mentioned in a document from the 9th century, which reports the donation by Charlemagne to the friars of San Zeno in Verona. For several centuries the island belonged to the friars and was then used for religious purposes.
In the 19th century the island was sold at auction and the new owners decided to rebuild the island's park, bring in exotic flowers and restore the villa. In 1927 the island was inherited by Count Alessandro Cavazza of Bologna, who then bequeathed it to his seven children, who continue to look after it with passion today.
